Types of Identity Theft


Financial IDT: most common and well know.  Usually pertains to your credit card and debit cards.  Usually the easiest to handle and spot.

Social Security IDT:  Non-financial mis-use can be very difficult to discover. 

Drivers License:
 
fraudulent use of a driver's license may result in erroneous driving records.

Medical IDT:
with the cost of medical care on the rise this is the fastest growing.  Can result in changes to your medical record.  These could be in the form of changes to your blood type of elimination of allergic reactions that could have life threating results should need emergency services.  Also financial obligations from someone else's use could occur.

Criminal IDT:
  the misuse of the victim's information in contacts with law enforcement, the end results are often an erroneous record for the victim.

Synthetic IDT: newest type where the criminal uses part of different individuals information to create a completely new identity.  As we work to make the more difficult this type of theft will increase

What can you do to prevent Identity Theft From Occurring?  YOU CAN"T but you can help to minimize the risk.

  • Never carry your social security card unless you have to have it that day.
  • Monitor Your Credit Report
  • Shred, Shred, Shred
  • Guard your trash
  • Photocopy and store all contents in your wallet or purse
  • Don't mail bills from home
  • Don't print your SSN or D.L. on your checks
  • Cancel unused cards (but this will lower your credit score).
  • Never give your social security number over the phone unless you initiate the call yourself.
  • Pay attention to billing cycles
  • Remove all personal information from computers, fax machines and printers before you dispose of them.
  • Purchase a good Identity Theft Package.

Remember, you can not eliminate your exposure but you can minimize the risk if you follow the items above
